We are pleased to announce that one of our doctoral students from the Quantum Information Systems Team, Akash Kundu, working on his PhD as part of the Joint Doctoral School, has been awarded a scholarship by the JM Rector of the Silesian University of Technology for publishing in one of the best journals in the field of interdisciplinary aspects of physics and astronomy.

Professor Erol Gelenbe, of IITIS PAN is among 19 speakers at the upcoming Abu Dhabi Artificial Intelligence Summit on December 12-13, 2022. The list of speakers includes three Fields Medalists in mathematics and two Turing Prize winners in computer science. Our employee is the only invited speaker from an institution in Central Europe.

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Mateusz Ostaszewski, who defended his doctoral thesis at IITiS PAN in 2020, has been awarded the Witold Lipski Prize for the best young computer scientists. The award is given to young Polish computer scientists by the Kosciuszko Foundation. Dr. Ostaszewski was honored with the award in the area of applied computer science.

We are pleased to congratulate our employees, Özlem Salehi and Adam Glos for winning the top prize in an international programming competition organized by Classiq. Adam i Özlem got the best score and created a quantum program for a task in which the problem was to solve Kakuro, a mathematical transliteration of a crossword puzzle. A detailed discussion of the task, along with a description of the proposed solution has been made available by the contest organizers.

We are pleased to announce that on May 6, 2022, a ceremony was held on the occasion of habilitation in the field of computer science with simultaneous promotion to the position of professor at the institute by Dr. Bartłomiej Gardas. According to the long-standing tradition of the institute, Prof. B. Gardas received a biretta and a unique, custom-made "Habilitation Wine". In addition, during the ceremony his dream as an assistant professor of B. Gardas was virtualized and then materialized in 1:18 scale and given to him.

Prof. Erol Gelenbe became an Honorary Fellow of the Islamic World Academy of Sciences (IAS) an international scientific non-government organization gathering 103 elected members from 30 nationalities.

Miło nam poinformować, iż trójka naszych pracowników – mgr inż. Mateusz Żarski i mgr inż. Bartosz Wójcik z Zespołu Komputerowych Systemów Wizyjnych oraz mgr Kamil Książek z Zespołu Systemów Multimedialnych – została uhonorowana przez JM Rektora Politechniki Śląskiej grantem za publikację w czołowym czasopiśmie z dziedziny inżynierii lądowej. Grant ten jest przyznawana w ramach programu Inicjatywa Doskonałości - Uczelnia Badawcza za opublikowanie pracy w czasopiśmie TOP1.

Our friend Katarzyna Filus was decorated by the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology with the OMNIUM STUDIOSORUM OPTIMO medal - "the best among students" and the Rector's Award of the 1st degree. The medal is awarded to graduates who distinguish themselves with special results in science and outstanding scientific achievements. This is the first such award in the history of IITiS PAN.
