Abstract

Technical development makes it possible to augment clinical examination of the stomatognathic system by the analysis of images acquired with different imaging modalities: virtual dental models - laser scans of dental models, 2D and 3D biometric photography, orthopantomograms (ORP) and cephalograms, Computed Tomography CT and Cone Beam Computed Tomography CBCT. All image data for one person form the patient specific record, which can be used for dignosis, progonosis, treatment planning, and the evaluation of treatment outcome, however, the analyzes performed for particular imaging modalities have to be integrated in the mind of a medical specialist. The paper presents an integration method for multimodal imaging data. The main idea relies on registration - a transformation of various imaging data into the same coordinate system, connected with the patient. A type of transformation has to be defined for each modality, according to the data representation used. The basis assumption is the presence, in the imaging data from various modalities, of common areas, which can be used to find the transformation through an optimization process. For disjoint images, where such common areas are not available, the use of additional reference objects is suggested and special transferring devices are designed. Registration of 3D images acquired at the same time amounts to a seek for a rigid-body transformation. Relating 2D and 3D images to each other involves identifying a projection. Presented examples of integration of multimodal image data include: fusion of 3D facial photography and digital dental models, producing digital gnathostatic models; segmenting the CT data with separation of craniomaxillary complex and the mandible using virtual dental models: determinig patient position during radiographic examination.
